Pneumonia is a common condition in not only the outpatient and ER setting, but also the hospital. It is associated with significant mortality and prompt identification and early treatment will help prevent complications and progression to sepsis. Appendicitis is always on differential when it comes to a patient with an acute abdomen and is also one of the most common reasons for emergent abdominal surgeries. There is a rich history in trying to diagnose appendicitis, especially in the time before advanced imaging, and many of classic findings in appendicitis stem from these early years of medicine. In this episode, we will cover the pathogenesis, historical clues, physical exam findings, pretest probability scoring systems, radiographical considerations, and management of one of the oldest surgical diseases in medicine.

Ankle injuries are one of the most common injuries presenting to both outpatient clinics and emergency departments, with a large percentage of these being ankle sprains. These sprains can be anywhere from a mild injury (with only a small amount of pain with ambulation) to severe (with significant functional limitations). The podcast will discuss the anatomy and structures of the ankle, grading and classification of the sprain types, important history and physical exam maneuvers, the indications for radiography, and finally management.

Transient Ischemia Attacks (TIAs or “mini-strokes”) are a harbinger of badness and a major risk factor for future strokes. The definition as undergone different re-iterations over the years, which has hampered some of the clinical and research utility. This podcast will discuss the current definition, the initial evaluation of a patient with a suspected TIA, the acute management, and how we as clinicians can help reduce modifiable risk factors and increase secondary prevention of future events.

Sore throat (as a chief complaint) is one of the most common reasons for a sick-child visit to the pediatrician’s office. Often times, there is parental concerns for strep throat and “just want to have them checked”. Just checking a Rapid Strep test or throat culture is no big deal right?
